Just got back from a busy weekend on the water. J.E.S. trip 3, on the Outer Limits Saturday opted to go to the Islands for good numbers of yellowtail than gamble on the off shore tuna and just get a long boat ride. The crew of the O/L did an exceptional job as usual and left us
all wanting to go back for more.
The water and weather was great. One foot swells and warmer afternoons provided a nice day for the 20 aboard the 65 foot vessel. Even with most of the San Diego fleet anchored up between north and south Island. The forktails were there, but getting through the California Cudas was
tough. We tried everything, kicker surface jigs, heavy jigs yo-yoed down, dropper loops etc.
The answer was a fast action 7 or 8 foot rod (Seeker, CJBF70 or similar), 30lbs line and a big, fat, healthy, fly lined sardine cast beyond the aggressive logs on a 2/0 hook. Let the yellows run for a while and then set the hook. Then off to the races. I came up with 4 all over
20lbs and the jackpot trophy was won by Kent Pramhus from Whitter with a nice 23 or so pound mossback caught late in the afternoon. Second place tie was Cathy Salinas from Gonzales, LA. ( WOW! what a fisher woman) and Richard Gehus from Garden Grove
Raffle prizes of a Seeker CJB70F went to Richard Garcia of Garden Grove. The Penn 500L was won by Bill Zablan of Los Alamitos and the Kicker Jigs went to Brain Weathers of San Pedro, Oscar Sandoval of Santa Ana,
Jerry Manla from Glendora and Victor Comacho of Paramount.
Congratulations gentleman. One note, the overall barracuda catcher went to 9 year old JB Berg. What a young man! He is a true sport. A Great group of guys and gals from Transcom Communications at the rail made this a trip wonderful leaving me wanting to do over again and again.
Thanks Guys and Gals!!!
Thanks to all my sponsors, Seeker Rods, Kicker Jigs and Seaforth Mortgage for all their product support. Maybe I will run a trip for these guys in the near future.
