7-7-2001 aboard the OuterLimits

As I start this trip I have to reflect on all of the great fishing excursions that I have hosted as a Charter Master. Some of my JES Sport Fishing trips have been the best fishing I have every seen. I remember the day we awoke at dawn aboard the Outer Limits and were held off fishing as the Albacore school we ran over in the night regrouped under the boat. A half hour later and @ 3scoops of bait on the slow toss later we went WFO for 4 ½ Hours on albacore to 40lb. We started in US water and drifted over the line, but we said no limits on this trip....Or was it the wide open Bluefin, Big Eye, Dorado .......………………Oh, who knows?

Some days you just cannot have all of the elements. This day was one of those occasions. Trip #3 aboard the Outer Limits started fantastic. A great group of 19 from the Vegas area and few past clients including TunaQ from Allcoast and we were ready. I started the trip with a very informative seminar at the top of the ramp so everyone knew what to expect come daylight. A stop at the bait receiver for a mix of well cured Chovie and Dine and off we went to the west. The previous weeks wind offshore had made a mess of the bite…. Water temps were scattered everywhere. The most significant area that showed good clean, cool water was out toward the Cherry bank!

We awoke to flat seas, nothing, no swell at all. The skies were breaking open and the day was meant for fishing. A slight breeze would have been nice to help with the drift, but overall things looked good. There were other charter boats in the area so my idea was correct, or so I thought! We worked all the areas. Every color of feather we had. Stopped on all of the paddies and even jigged for the fish. We got stops on the small 8-12 lb. Longfins, but they wouldn't eat the bait. On one stop I counted more than 15 breezers in the water and not one of them hit a bait. The very next stop I saw my bait get boiled on, the guy next to me also got boiled on and that same fish inhaled a sardine on freshwater Dacron that turned out to be the jackpot! Go Figure. The crew was stumped, I was stumped and my guests just kept on trying…After all, any day on the water is better than a day working……Right?

Well, we wound up with 20 Albacore and a few Spanish jacks. Even they were stubborn on the bait! They all must have all been on the feed on the big moon the previous night. The trip ended with the usual JES Sport Fishing upbeat measure with a great meal, home made peach and apple pie and the raffles that get everyone wound up again.

Seeker CJBF70M was awarded to Conrad Motis, a Saber 270 was taken home by Brian Booth, The Penn reel was awarded to the hot hand on the trip Bill Mc Call (3 Albies), Kicker Jigs, Rapala lures and J.E.S. Sportfishing sportswear were stowed by Randy Upton, Bill Boyd, Dennis Jaworski and Jason Landberg. All of these winners from the Las Vegas area.

Jackpot was won by Rae Mc Anlis as her husband looked on! She got worked on a 9 foot spinning combo … Excellent recovery Rae!

That spinner with 40lb braid, drag locked down tight, really had our jackpot winner workin' full out!

Thanks to the great people at Seeker Rods, Kicker Jigs, B.C.Distributing, Penn, CTX Mortgage for their continued product support.

Hope to see you all on the water and good fishing to everyone.
